"Head, Heart chronicles a short, yet meaningful interaction between the entities of the head and the heart. Each, the head and the heart have recently suffered an immense loss and feel great distress. At this time, the head acts as a counselor to the heart, to comfort the heart in its moments of despair. Davis portrays the entities of the head and heart in such a way that allows the audience to connect with the characters in a manner that allows the reader's own head and heart to take the place of the characters and feel as they feel. She also does a good job, inducing a great sense of empathy in the reader, causing them to reflect on their own life as they recall similar, and shows more personal interactions. At one point in the poem, she takes a break from the form of the poem to relate an overarching theme of the poem where one expects another line ending with "heart", the speaker completely stops out of the narrative and disguises an empathetic message meant to tug at the heartstrings of the reader in the form of the quote from Head: "You will lose the ones you love. They will all go. But even the earth will go, someday"(4). This right here changes almost half of the poem for the reader, causing them to ingest it from a different, more personal level. This causes the readers to reflect on their own lives more, especially if they have been through something that they have overcome in their lives. They are now stronger for it and can pretty much get through anything else God decides to throw at them. Davis nests one concluding for the reader. The speaker abandons the role of the narrator and speaks directly to the head: "Help, head. Help heart."(10). By instructing the head to help the heart. Davis illustrates the fragility of the heart and its need for head rationale. Even though this poem was very short, it was very powerful, and many people can relate to it, considering it is a common struggle amongst people daily. The reason I chose to annotate this poem is because it spoke to me, it is talking about what I am going through right now, heart break. So, when I saw this poem, it talked about and brought up things that I'm going through and how I'm feeling, so I figured I could relate the most to this poem and would be able to annotate it well. The title, "Head, Heart", gives the vibe of which one you should be listening to, whether it's making a decision about a relationship, or if you have lost a loved one recently, whatever the case may be. In my personal experience, you have to listen to your gut feeling, but you also have to listen to your head. Because the heart wants what it wants, but that's not always the best thing for you. Because even though you might want them badly just as much as they want you back at a certain time, as time goes on, you might be better off without them, they could've hurt you to the point where you can't put yourself in that position again. You have to look out for you, and what is best for you. The head and the heart could be wanting very different things, it's just a matter of what is best for you, you must look out for your own best interests at heart.
