Well
Wake In Fright
What inspired the name Wake In Fright?
Um... you know, you know sometimes I'm like-- In the paradigm of pop music I'm tryna do-- tryna change it up a little bit, so there's this, this famous film, Roger Corman film, Wake In Fright, it's taken from the name of this Roger Corman film, it's about--
It's cinema
--significant, deep, deep art
And deep art
Film, deep art film, Roger Corman-- hit 'em with the art, and the cinema. Art cinema
Now, towards the end of the song, you're saying-- I have trouble distinguishing, are you s-- Franken Fries, was it?
Fright
Fraken Fright? Fries?
Fright
So, you grew up on the island of Zembla
Yes. Zеmbla
And we, we now know what the еffects of polar ice cap melting has had on your nation, the sea level rise, and the mount of land, and city, and resources gone, it's... only on the rise, further, now-- could you, talk about what it was like growing up there? Because even before this happened, it was already a difficult place to be a child, was it not?
Yes
Gan-gangs, drugs, violence, poverty
I- um, yes. The [stereo?]--
Could you speak to how that effects your music and uh, who you are today?
It's um... There's post traumatic stress, um... There were difficult conditions, there was-- these are complicated situations, that are hard to summarize. Th- political pandering...
Did you see--
World bank of...
Did you see difficult things for a young man at that age? Were there--
We all did. We all did. Geopolitical governments are sweeping in and putting conditions on our, on our underdog government, we've become impoverished and, and indebted, t-to many things, definitely the Republic of America, I mean I, um... I feel like that's a personal struggle, as a legal-- as a legal immigrant. These...
You feel a certain sense of guilt that you're here while there's so many others struggling to get off of Zembla
Guilt, yes, it's confusing conditions that are getting worse, that I'm constantly reminded of, and this attempt to raise awareness and-- I'm not there
Well that, that must be a difficult situation. You're out there on the red carpet, and you know what it's like for your people...
Yes
Does that, does that stay in your mind while you're performing? While you're meeting people? While you're uh, traveling the circuit?
Yes. In this certain situation I was on tour, um, just finishing up a tour, for A Simple Butterfly, and um-- one of our last shows, I tripped over a microphone cable, and I felt like it was a dead body
It brought back that imagery from your childhood?
It did. But it was, it was a microphone cable
These things just never do go away, do they?
No
That's heavy
...microphone cable...
And so, you got to [THE REPUBLIC] through your original success with your first video that went plaque
Yes
And uh... how old were you at that time?
Twelve
Wow, twelve years old! And at that point you came straight to [THE REPUBLIC], did you ever go back to Zembla?
No. I didn't want to go back
